Diabetes Awareness Training
For Social Care Providers
Excellent update of knowledge in a great informal environment that allowed questions and interaction, […] just what I needed to improve my confidence!
Kate Heron, Clinical Educator
This interactive workshop is designed to lay the foundations of diabetes understanding and to empower people working within the social care sector and in community health roles with the skills and confidence to support adults living with diabetes.
The session will cover:
-
What diabetes is and the different types of diabetes
-
The signs and symptoms of diabetes
-
Monitoring – what checks are done to ensure that diabetes is well controlled
-
The long term effects (complications) of diabetes
-
How diabetes is treated (a brief overview - more detail is provided during the 'Enhanced Diabetes Awareness' session, see below for details)
-
Signs and symptoms of hypoglycaemia (hypo) and how to manage a hypo
-
High blood glucose - a brief overview, including causes
-
Sick day care - a brief summary
-
The role food plays and 'carb consistency'
-
The importance of physical activity
-
Footcare
-
What are 'emergency alerts/urgent referrals'
The workshop highlights the implications of diabetes for the older person and touches on frailty; as well as diabetes and learning disabilities (and additional resources signposted).
We normally also schedule a complementing Blood Glucose Monitoring & Glucometer Training on the same day, depending on your needs.
For Healthcare Professionals (primary care)
We have also created an extended version for people in primary care roles (such as healthcare assistants, nurse assistants, and clinical pharmacists), undertaking diabetes reviews. It builds and extends the learners' existing knowledge and includes an additional focus on the 'eight key care processes' and 'the importance of holistic diabetes care'.
This enables learners to:
-
have an increased awareness and knowledge of what diabetes is and how it is managed
-
understand the implications for adults of all ages – to ensure a holistic, person-centred, and safe approach in line with current national guidelines.
-
increase skills and confidence when supporting or treating people with diabetes
-
know when and where to refer people requiring additional services
-
maintain or even improve the quality of life for adults living with diabetes
We work with individual Integrated Care Boards to tailor this session for your locality, which can include an overview of the services available to your patients.
I would highly recommend this course to all staff dealing with Diabetes. The course lecturers were informative, friendly, and made the course so understandable, not only about the types of diabetes but also why we carry out the checks that we do.
Sam Chapman, Healthcare Assistant
